Your donation goes to a deserving teacher candidate
The Rotary Club of Hanalei Bay Growing Our Own Teachers Scholarship Fund is designed to provide financial aid for students on Kauai, who live within our community and strive to become teachers through the University of Hawaii Teacher Education Program. The program allows students to stay on Kauai with their families and still get the same quality education they would get by relocating to Oahu.

In 2007 the club awarded over $48,000 to local teacher candidates.

After teacher candidates complete their first two years of college (most of them complete an AA degree at Kauai Community College), they are able to complete an additional two years right here on Kauai and receive their baccalaureate degree and teaching certificate through the University of Hawaii, Manoa.

Dr. Kani Blackwell of the University of Hawaii provided the inspiration for the scholarship fund and is an advisor on the selection committee.

It's not easy and it's not cheap.
Students who receive assistance through the scholarship fund live and work here on Kauai, are placed in local schools for their field experience, and are committed to teaching in schools on Kauai. Most local teacher candidates have to pay for their own college education. They do it by working a full-time job or by working several part-time jobs. Many candidates have families. Some are the sole income provider in their household. They have to balance family, work and school at the same time. With tuition, plus books, a computer, software, supplies, and other associated expenses, the costs are approximately $4000 per semester or $16,000 for the two-year program.

In spite of all this, there are many local teacher candidates who have the motivation and dedication to tough it through. Until that is, their final semester. At this time, they must quit their jobs and serve full-time in the classroom with their mentor teacher, Monday through Friday, everyday. Elementary Teacher candidates do not get paid for student teaching and the commitment to practicing teaching is full-time. Many teacher candidates cannot afford to finish that last stretch to become a teacher.

The Growing Our Own Teachers Scholarship addresses this critical problem and helps put deserving teacher candidates in local classrooms by providing the funds that help them complete their certification.
