Kalani Vierra of the Ocean Safety Bureau dreamed of an ocean safety facility on the North Shore. The Rotary Club of Hanalei Bay made his dream a reality.
Over the past several years there has been a dramatic increase in population and tourism on Kauai. Our beaches and ocean waters are more crowded than ever before and as a result there has been an increase in ocean rescue emergencies. A large percentage of these emergencies occur on the North Shore. The Ocean Safety Bureau allocated additional personnel and equipment to the area to address the problem but the infrastructure needed to support the effort was missing due to a lack of funding. The Rotary Club of Hanalei Bay stepped up to the plate to provide a solution.
The Rotary Club of Hanalei Bay designed and built a double-bay 36x40 facility in Hanalei that provides storage for the jet ski's, ATV's, pick-up trucks, and trailers that are used to save lives on the North Shore. Ocean Safety Personnel now have a place to complete paperwork and prepare reports, perform equipment inspections, and conduct training sessions. The building is also designed to be used in emergencies to provide local support for emergency response teams.
