Rebuilding a national landmark.
In June of 2013, the Rotary Club of Hanalei Bay completed construction of the Hanalei Pier Canopy and had a blessing ceremony that included Governor Neil Abacrombie and Kauai Mayor Bernard Carvalho. The majority of the funding was donated by caring people in the community and friends of the Pier from around the world. Our thanks and congratulations to everyone that participated.
The pier is part of our heritage and a symbol of Hanalei.
The Hanalei Pier, originally constructed of wood, has been in existence since 1892. The Pier has changed in both its appearance and function over the nearly 120 years of existence. In the early 20th century, it was a major hub for the transportation of rice, sugar and various goods between the other Hawaiian Islands and the rest of the world via the Pacific Ocean. But, for the last 80 years or so, it has been a recreational resource for the people of Kauai and the site of several major movies including “South Pacific” in 1979 and recently “The Descendants”. In 1991, a major reconstruction of the pier, including the concrete pilings, pier and the wooden roof, or “canopy” was under taken by the State of Hawaii. Make a donation today to help with the future maintenance of the Pier.
