Hanalei Rotary Project wins $10,000 Donation from Weinberg Foundation

Hanalei Black Pot Beach Park received a make over on November 18, 2006 when members of the Rotary Club of Hanalei Bay cleaned and painted the bathrooms, showers, and picnic tables in partnership with The Weinberg Friends Program.

After the work was completed, a check for $10,000 from the Weinberg Foundation was presented to the Kauai Food Bank.

"This is really a double win for the community," said Steve Whitney, President of the Rotary Club of Hanalei Bay. "The Beach Park gets the upgrades it needs and the Food Bank gets the funding they need to provide food for the hungry."

"We are very pleased and grateful to be chosen by The Rotary Club of Hanalei Bay to receive the Weinberg Friends Program Grant of $10,000," said Jeanette Nadeau, Executive Assistant at the Kauai Food Bank. "We plan to use the funds for our Kids Cafe Program and Annual Turkey Distribution."

The Weinberg Friends Program encourages service organizations to perform community projects by offering a $10,000 grant to an approved charity upon completion of the project. The Rotary Club of Hanalei applied for the grant based on the work at Black Pot Beach and selected the Kauai Food Bank as the recipient.

Catherine Ham Young, who adopted the park under the county's Adopt a Park Program, joined the Rotarians as they sanded and painted the picnic tables

"This is great to have so many people helping to fix up the park," she said. Thirty four members of the club participated in the work and it was completed in time for the busy afternoon beach activities.
